Bright Ideas for a Resilient World
When: Tuesday, April 22nd – EARTH DAY
Time: 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Where: GLNY Resource Center (31 Chambers Street, Suite 609)
Free admission, but registration required (space is limited)
Green Light New York is having an exhibition and discussion on low carbon lighting solutions being created by social entrepreneurs, and their ability to empower the underserved and strengthen communities in crisis.   (Beer reception, follows.)

Earth Week: SEA of Thoughts – Climate Change and Health
When: Tuesday, April 22nd
Time: 11:30am
Where: Hess CommonsPlease join for the second SEA of Thoughts of the year!  The Earth Day discussion is called Climate Change and Health: Adapting to a Changing Planet.  Dr. Joseph Graziano (EHS) will moderate a discussion between Dr. Patrick Kinney (EHS) and Dr. Sylwia Trzaska (Earth Institute).

A light lunch will be provided.

Earth Week: Earth University
When: Tuesday, April 22nd
Time: 12:00 pm
Where: Butler Plaza (rain location: Carman Lounge)
On EARTH DAY, April 22nd, Barnard Columbia Divest for Climate Justice is hosting an all-day Earth University. Professors and community leaders will be offering classes outside, inviting others into their classrooms, or conducting workshops. Topics will range from ethics and religion to greenhouse gas emissions and mountaintop removal.Here’s the Facebook event with the full schedule. Feel free to come anytime between 12-8pm. Check in at Butler Plaza (or Carman lounge if it’s raining).  screen-printing for shirts will be offered so bring a t-shirt if you’d like to paint it!

There will also be a free dinner at 7pm on Furnald lawn (or in Carman lounge if it rains).

The Earth Institute Practicum in Innovative Sustainability Leadership: Building Sustainable Communities

Sustaining the Momentum: A Lunch Talk on Business Improvement District Programs
When: Wednesday, April 23rd
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm
Where: 405 International Affairs Building
Speakers: Mr. Wellington Chen, an architect, city planner, business man and public servant will share with us his experience in developing sustainability with the grass root organization’s power. He led “business improvement program of Chinatown” for many years, with abundant experience and lessons that could be copied by any cities in the world.

Birnbaum, PhD, DABT, ATS, will present the 21st Annual Sewell Distinguished Lecture in Environmental Health Sciences, part of Grand Rounds on the Future of Public Health, titled, “When Our Environment Acts Like Medicine…”

Spring 2014 Earth Institute Student Research Showcase
When: Friday, April 25th
Time: 2:00pm
Where: Presidential Suite, Faculty House
Each year the Earth Institute highlights student research through the Earth Institute Internship and Undergraduate RA programs, the Millennium Villages Project, and the Earth Institute Travel Grant.  Students will present their work through these programs with a poster session and reception.  The event will begin with a video featuring an introduction from Jeff Sachs and interviews with the student researchers.This is an excellent opportunity for your to support the research of your colleagues as well as to learn more about student opportunities at the Earth Institute.

Earth Week: Harlem Grown Season Kick-Off
When: Saturday, April 26th
Time: 10:00am
Where: 118 West 134th Street

Help Harlem Grown kick off the growing season by prepping beds, composting, and planting the first seeds of the season!  If you are interested in participating, please sign up here (and feel free to invite friends to sign up!).  The garden is located at 118 W. 134th St
